BICYCLE CULTURE - November 14 1998 to January 3 1999 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

An examination of Bay Area bicycle culture from both its activist and aesthetic viewpoints, guest curated by Slimm Buick of San Francisco with the cooperation of Kimo Toguchi of American Cyclery and Shanon Essex of The Bicycle Trader. This exhibition, the first of its kind for a major arts institution, feaured artwork inspired by bicycles and created by members of the local bike community. Bicycle Culture marked the first time an exhibition highlighted the Bay Area as the center for the world's burgeoning cycling movement. Offering art, artifacts and museum-quality vintage bicycles, Bicycle Culture underscored how the bicycle serves as a focal point for a multi-faceted community.

Kurt Wold surprised many during the exhibit's install with his Machine #10 (from the series Dada Rode a Bicycle/MoMA was a peddler). Wold's sculpture arrived like a peeled orange, with his assistant, assembled the seven-foot diameter sphere in less than fifteen minutes. Wold played his bicycle percussion system for opening night.
